Big money for Big Bots?

After the demise of BattleBots(tm) and Robot Wars(tm) public interest in fighting robots quickly waned.  Without the impetus of television other novelties captured the public's attention and the "techno sport" of robot combat has been losing participants ever since.  This is particularly true for "big bots" - fighting robots in the Heavyweight (220 lb)  and Super Heavyweight (340 lb) classes.  These machines can cost thousands of dollars to build,  are difficult and thus expensive to transport, and have a limited number of venues in which to compete.

The post-TV population of these competitors has dropped precipitiously every year since 2003.
  • 2003 122
  • 2004 49
  • 2005 57
  • 2006 29

In an effort to reverse this trend, Billy Moon of Team Moon Robotics and David "JudegDave" Calkins of COMBOTS LLC, producer of Robogames have teamed up with a few other anonymous supporters to offer a cash sponsorship to anyone who will build a new HW or SHW robot and enter it in at least one of four events in 2007.   Qualifying applicants will receive $400 for each new Heavyweight and $600 for each new Super Heavyweight that competes.   When this idea was first broached in the Robot Fighting League's Forum there was a limit of 10, which presumably is still in effect.

Will this work?  Its hard to say - so far there are 13 new robots "in the queue" to receive the cash, but it remains to be seen how many will be completed and enter events.  Still, its refreshing to see someone "put their money where their mouth is" and attempt to solve a perceived problem rather than simply complaining about it.
